The public transport system within Umkhanyakude district municipality is very different to any European or American public transport system and minibus taxis operate between rural areas and commercial centres such as Mtubatuba, Hluhluwe, Jozini Manguzi, Hlabisa and other smaller centres. These mini bus taxis are not bound to any time schedule and operate according to African time which makes them rather erratic and not suitable to persons working according to any fixed schedule or time frame.

These mini bus taxis also operate between all commercial centers and link up with long distance Mini Bus taxis that operate between these commercial centers and major towns such as Empangeni, Richards Bay, Pongola, Piet Retief and Durban.

These Mini bus / taxis do not leave their depots until they are full, so one often has to wait a considerable time before getting on the road. These mini bus taxis also do not pick up passengers at the far point, but only drop passengers off, usually at a taxi rank and . they then return to their starting point, picking up passengers standing along the road side at any unscheduled point along the way.

When returning to Umkhanyakude one goes to any local taxi rank and catches a taxi to a central point from where a long distance taxi will take you to any one of the central commercial points from where one will need to catch a local taxi to your final destination.

Being on time is not an African concept, so ensure that you get to any airport in good time and discuss this with your travel consultant well in advance, because the air plane wont wait for you.  Air planes and air port staff operate on a different concept of time to the Mini Bus taxis.
